About Our Organization
A Century of Dedication to Education and Community Welfare
Late P. Subramanya Udayar was born on October 28th, 1891. He lost his father when he was barely a year old. Due to the financial constraint in his family, he discontinued his school education and went to work to support his family. He worked in the Printing Press attached to The Theosophical Society in Adyar. At that time, he was only 12 years, he was very sincere and hardworking and impressed everyone with his work.
Dr. Annie Besant was very impressed with his dedication to his job. He became the Supervisor of the Printing Press when he was 14 years old. He was very keen on starting his own business, so with the blessings of Dr. Annie Besant he started a Type Foundry. He named it as "The Madras Type Foundry," and he started being very enterprising, he did very well in his business. Unfortunately he suffered from a severe bout of jaundice from which he did not recover and passed away in 1931.
He was a very disciplined and charitable person and he was able to understand the difficulties that children of less privileged families faced regarding education. So he started a Trust in which a certain amount of money from the Type Foundry was allotted for education of poor students from the Udayar Community. He also started a free dispensary in Saidapet for the General Public. All his charitable work is still being continued by his Charitable Trust.
